Patrick Nagatani was born on August 19, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
Patrick Nagatani received a Bachelor of Arts from California State University, Los Angeles, in 1967 and in 1980 received a Master of Fine Arts from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles).
A teacher at Fairfax Community Adult School in Los Angeles from 1976, Patrick Nagatani has also done freelance photography since 1973 and taught at Hamilton High School since 1968. Patrick Nagatani was an art director for Orange Peel Graphics in Hollywood, California (1966-1974).
Nagatani's work has been exhibited in venues internationally, including the Art Institute of Boston; Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego; and the Royal Photographic Society, Bath, England. Numerous books have featured his work including Seizing the Light: A History of Photography by Robert Hirsch (2000), and Photography by Barbara London and John Upton (1998).
