Patrick Rothfuss was born on June 6, 1973, in Madison, Wisconsin, United States.
Patrick Rothfuss enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1991. At the university, he originally planned to study chemical engineering but later he changed his specialization to clinical psychology. However, he abandoned that as well, admitted he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life, and changed his major to undeclared despite. Over the next six years, Rothfuss studied everything that interested him: philosophy, medieval history, eastern theater, anthropology, sociology. After nine years as an undergraduate Pat was forced by university policy to finally complete his undergraduate degree. In 1999, Rothfuss received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English philology. He also studied at Washington State University where he received a Master of Arts degree.
Patrick Rothfuss started his career as a writer when he was a student at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. During this time he went to work at various odd jobs and, at the same time wrote poetry for a local literary series, a satirical advice column for the local paper called The Pointer, and scripts for a radio comedy show. Two months before he graduated, Pat finally finished his project called The Song of Flame and Thunder. It was a huge epic fantasy that was split into three volumes and renamed The Kingkiller Chronicle.
Patrick Rothfuss also worked as a teacher at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. He sent his novel to several publishers, but it was rejected. In 2002, Rothfuss won the Writers of the Future 2002 Second Quarter competition with an extract from his novel. At this competition, he met Kevin Anderson, who introduced him to his agent, Matt Bialer. Eventually, Matt brought Pat in contact with his current, beloved editor, Betsy Wollheim, president of Daw Books. In 2007, the first novel in the trilogy, The Name of the Wind, was published. The second book, The Wise Man’s Fear, was published in March 2011. The third book with the working title The Doors of Stone has not yet been published. Rothfuss published a companion tale for The Kingkiller Chronicle in 2014. He also released two novella-length stories set in the same world as The Kingkiller Chronicle. The first one was published in 2013 and the second in 2014. Rothfuss was a co-author of Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons.
Patrick Rothfuss began a monthly podcast called The Story Board in 2012. It was a podcast about fantasy books and it ran for eight episodes. In 2015, Rothfuss and Max Temkin started a podcast called Unattended Consequences. The last episode appeared on 11 December 2018.
