(This book contains interviews with physicists, biologists...)
This book contains interviews with physicists, biologists, and chemists who have been involved in some of the most exciting discoveries in modern scientific thought. The conversations—with Bohm, Pattee, Penrose, Rosen, Rosenfeld, Somorjai, Weizsäcker, Wheeler, and Nobel prizewinners Heisenberg, Dirac, and Prigogine—explore issues which have shaped modern physics and those which hint at what may form the next scientific revolution. The discussions range over a set of basic problems in physical theory and their possible solutions—the understanding of space and time, quantum and relativity theories and recent attempts to unite them—and deal with related questions in theoretical biology. The approach is non-technical, with an emphasis on the assumptions of modern science and their implications for understanding the world we live in. The book, which originated in a highly successful radio series, provides a vivid first-hand account of some of the astounding and perplexing developments in modern science, a rare overview that will intrigue the informed non-scientist and the scientist alike.

During 2 years from 1977, he worked at the position of a science adviser, at the Government of Saskatchewan.

1976Quotations: “In co-editing and contributing an essay for Glimpsing Reality, my intention was to move certain paradoxical ideas of physics and biology from their specialist context into the wider realm of interested non-specialists who might appreciate the difficulties encountered when science reaches levels of interpretation beset with uncertainty. I feel that this problem should be shared with a wider audience. All is not smooth sailing in the heart of the scientific enterprise. We found that, in the form of conversations with leading scientists, the puzzling features of some ideas would manifest themselves in an interesting way. Adding essays, we thought, would allow the problems to be discussed in a more intensive way. In this manner, an original contribution to the ongoing reflections could be offered to the general reader with interests close to the philosophic spirit. What motivated me was and is a desire to clarify where ideas nudge one another in a somewhat confused way and to make some progress in general understanding of the world we inhabit.”
Buckley married Lorraine, on September 10, 1960. They divorced in 1974. Later he married Claudia, but they separated, as well, in 1987. Buckley has children from the first marriage - Dominique, Melina and Paul Steven, and from the second - Thomas and Liam.
