Career
In 1989 under his leadership, Virginia became the first state laboratory capable of performing deoxyribonucleic acid fingerprinting. Prior to his directorship of the state"s Department of Forensic Science, he was a professor of forensic science at Virginia Commonwealth University. Doctor Ferrara died on May 30, 2011 of brain cancer at the age of 68.
