Paul Geraghty attended the University of Natal (now University of KwaZulu-Natal), where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts and English and earned a Higher Diploma in Education.
Paul Geraghty began his career as a teacher of Art and English in Cape Town, South Africa. He also worked for an advertising agency. In 1986, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he has become an author and illustrator of children's picture books and teenage fiction, often visiting schools, libraries, and colleges as well as conducting the occasional writers' workshop. Presently, he lives in London and makes occasional visits to schools to talk about books and draw for audiences.
Beginning his work as a picture book creator with Over the Steamy Swamp, Geraghty in 1989 has gone on to create a number of offerings, among them Monty's Journey in 1993, Solo in 1996, and Tortuga 2001. In addition to illustrated works for the storybook set authored by both himself and others, Geraghty is also the author of the young adult novels Pig (1988) and Tina Come Home (1991).
Paul Geraghty is particularly known as an author and illustrator of children's picture books. He received Maskew Miller Longman Young Africa Award in 1988 for Pig. In 1996, he got the Children’s Book Award in the picture book category for Solo. His picture book The Hunter was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration and won the Earthworm Award. Tortuga and Rotten & Rascal have both won awards in France.
