(Schott). The book aims to be a guide through the little universe which is the working place of the man who writes music. As such it talks predominantly to the layman, although the expert composer may also find some stimulation in it... From the center of basic theory the discussion will spread out into all the realms of experience which border the technical aspects of composing, such as aesthetics, sociology, philosophy, and so on.

(Schott). Originally published in the 1940s, Paul Hindemith's remakable textbooks are still the outstanding works of their kind. In contrast to many musical textbooks written by academic musicians, these were produced by a man who could play every instrument of the orchestra, could compose a satisfying piece for almost every kind of ensemble, and who was one of the most stimulating teachers of his day. It is therefore not surprising that nearly forty years later these books should remain essential reading for the student and the professional musician. (Paul Hindemith was a German composer, violist, violinist,...)
Paul Hindemith was a German composer, violist, violinist, teacher, music theorist and conductor. Since 1923 Hindemith was member of the organization committee of the Donaueschinger Musiktage, where the first performance of his string quartet op. 16 secured him great reputation. In 1927 Hindemith was appointed professor for composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and in 1929, he gave the first performance of William Walton's Viola Concerto. Hindemith's career as a composer prospered in the thirties, but as did many others he suffered with the advent of Hitler and after 1933, his works disappeared from the concert programmes. He became a exile first in Switzerland (1938), then in America (1940), taking the American citizenship in 1946 and lecturing at the Yale University. In 1951 he accepted the position of a professor in Zurich and finally settled in Switzerland 1953 (in Blonay)

Born on November 16, 1895 in Hanau, near Frankfurt am Main.
He attended Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt and studied there with Arnold Mendelssohn and Bernhard Sekles.
His training developed his unusual abilities as a violinist and he joined the Frankfurt Opera orchestra, where he served as concertmaster from 1915 to 1923.
Hindemith's interest in composition began early, and his music attracted immediate attention.
By 1925 he was recognized as the outstanding modern German composer, and his compositions were featured at all important festivals.
In 1927 Hindemith began to experiment successfully in writing so-called Gebrauchsmusik ("music for use") for school and home; among his compositions of this type an operetta, Hier und zurückzuruck (1927) (There and Back), is frequently performed in the United States. Hindemith's symphony Mathis der Maler (1934) ("Mathis the Painter"), based on themes from his opera of the same name, revealed a new stylistic development that was to characterize his later work.
He then withdrew from active teaching in Germany and, at the invitation of Mustafa Kemal Pasha, devoted much of his time to organizing the musical life of Turkey.
In 1940 he moved to the United States and joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music, becoming an American citizen in 1946.
Hindemith's many compositions reveal a remarkable versatility.
The earlier works, composed mainly for chamber groups, reflect the anti-Romantic tendencies characteristic of German creative work after World War I, but the harsh dissonances and vague tonalities of this music were considerably modified in later works as the composer's style matured.
Strongly tonal, with its contrapuntal dissonances skillfully controlled, this symphony followed new theories of composition which in 1937 were published in his book Unterweisung im Tonsatz (The Craft of Musical Composition, 1942).
These theories, not a radical break from, but a logical expansion of, traditional concepts, have had great influence on contemporary musicians.
In 1953 he resigned his Yale appointment to accept a teaching position at the University of Zurich, and from 1955 on he devoted himself to composing and conducting.
Other theoretical works are Traditional Harmony (1943, revised 1946) and Elementary Training for Musicians (1946).
Hindemith's ideas on music and musicians are given in A Composer's World (1952), lectures given at Harvard University in 1949-1950.
Important among Hindemith's later and larger works are his operas Cardillac (1926, revised 1952) and Neues vom Tage ("News of the Day") (1929, revised 1953), a song cycle for soprano Das Marienleben (1924, revised 1948), violin sonata in E (1935), three piano sonatas (1936), violin concerto (1939), symphony in E-flat (1941), Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Weber (1943), Ludus Tonalis for piano (1943), the oratorio When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed (1946), Sinfonia Serena (1947), concerto for horn (1949), symphony for band (1951), Ite, Angeli Veloces for soloists, chorus, orchestra, and wind ensemble (1955), and the symphony Die Harmonie der Welt (1951) from the score of an opera of the same name completed in 1957.
