Smith studied at New World School of Arts. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kansas City Art Institute in 2010, where he studied ceramics and painting.
Smith has participated in group exhibitions since 2009. His has also had solo show at Atlanta Contemporary, Green Gallery in Milwaukee, and Real Art Ways in Hartford. In addition, in 2018, Paul appeared in the Open Spaces biennial, that was organized by Dan Cameron in Kansas City.
During Paul's visit to his native Jamaica, he was struck by the almost invisible airport workers and he painted large- and small-scale compositions that depict these anonymous figures, rendered simply and boldly in order to invest them with dignity and poise.
Smith was a visiting artist at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in 2014, 2015 and in 2017. Paul, in his works, uses a technique he calls "picotage", to cut into and lift the surface of the photograph into geometric patterns over images he personally photographs. Nowadays he lives and works in Brooklyn.

2017Smith's picotage-like images are created by picking away at the surface material of photographic prints to create textures that echo tribal masks and scarification and create a near iridescent effect.
