He was first the state member for Burwood from 1984 to 1988. Then, after Burwood was abolished, he became state member for Strathfield from 1988 to 1996. In 1991, he was made Assistant Minister to the Premier Nick Greiner and held that post when John Fahey took over as Premier in 1992.
Zammit announced that he would seek his ultimate successful Liberal preselection of Lowe a day after he was reelected in Strathfield which drew outraged as he was reelected the day before with the understanding from him that he would serve as the reelected member for Strathfield for the full term.
