Paul Ackermann was born on September 5, 1919, in Bremen, Germany, the son of Paul and Wilma Ackermann. They came to the United States in 1935.
Paul Ackermann studied at Trinity School, New York. He then received his Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University, his Master of Arts from Columbia, and his Ph.D. from Harvard.
Paul Ackermann began his career at Amherst College where he taught briefly before he began teaching at Boston University in 1948. He started from instructor in German, but since 1965 he was professor of German at Boston University.
Paul was a member of Boston University scholarship committee, 1959 - 1964, then chairman, 1962 - 1964, of College Language Association library committee, 1965 - 1968, of commission on Student Support in 1966, of Academic Standards committee, 1966 - 1968, and of commission on Graduate Education, 1969 - 1970.
Ackermann also edited and designed the Boston University Journal, a collection of literary criticism, fiction, poetry and art, from 1966 - 1980.
In later years, Paul and his wife Barbara returned every summer to Germany where they particularly enjoyed spending time on the island of Sylt in the wild North Sea.

1959A life-long pacifist, Ackermann was one of approximately two thousand conscientious objectors during World War II who spent four years in work camps, putting out forest fires, volunteering for medical research, and performing other acts of public service.
Ackermann was a member of Modern Language Association, American Association Teachers of German, New England Modern Language Association, International Vereingung f. German, Thomas Mann Gesellschaft, Goethe Society New England.
Paul Ackermann married Barbara Hulley on December 31, 1945. They had two children: Richard and Joan.
