This study projects the composite image of the elites of civil, foreign, and military services--their socioeconomic and regional background, their education, marriages, and careers. Approximately 13,000 questionnaires furnished information revealing, among other inferences, that these men and women are in social motion, that it is now less easy for top-level fathers to guarantee top positions to their sons, and that many have come up from less favored origins.
