Career
She is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore (NUS Grad. Medical School), where she is also the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She was educated at the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus and Catholic Junior College, before going on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and statistics at the National University of Singapore. She then went on to the University of Virginia in the United States, where she earned a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in sociology.
She has been teaching at NUS Grad. Medical School since 1991.
