Graduate Yekaterinoslav parish school.
From 1903 at railroad workshops. 1904 joined Mensheviks. 1907 arrested, imprisoned for two years, then exiled for life to Yeniseysk Province.
1910 fled from exile and went abroad. Worked in Vienna, Florence and Paris. March 1917 returned to Russia and worked at Yekaterinoslav Railroad Workshops.
From late 1917 with Petrograd Proletarian Culture Organisation Then ed, journal Gryadushcheye in his lit articles analysed worker poets and criticized Futurism. Late 1919 drafted into Red Army, sent to Southern Front and appointed ed of an army newspaper.
