During World War 1 chief of Staff, 3rd Army. 1918 joined Red Army. May 1918-March 1919 head.
Draft Board, All-Russian General Headquarters. April-Juny 1919 chief of staff, Eastern Front. July 1919- February 1921 chief, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Field Headquarters.
February 1921-April 1924 chief of staff, Red Army. 1919-1924 also member, Revol Military Council. 1922-1924 commandant, Red Army Military Academy.
1924-1925 plenipotentiary for major assignments, USSR Revol Military Council. 1925-1928 chief of staff and assistant commander, Ukraine Military district. 1924-1927 also chief director of all military acad, responsible for military admin.
1927 contracted serious illness. 1928 relieved as chief of staff but continued to act as assistant commander, Ukraine Military district.
