Larry is thrilled when another renter, a young college student named Mandy, moves in to occupy the other rental unit in his building. Mandy is penniless and friendless, having cut herself off from her family because of an affair in which her married father was involved. Larry slowly becomes obsessed with Mandy, making overtures of friendship that gradually become more obtrusive and menacing. Larry eventually sneaks into Mandy's apartment and steals her mail. When Mandy begins to bring home a lover (a married man), Larry's obsession erupts with disastrous and chilling results.

Penelope Evans was born in 1959, in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, United Kingdom to Colin Everson Evans, a surgeon, and Anne (Lewis) Evans.
Evans graduated from University of St. Andrews with M.A. in 1981 and from City of London University with diploma in law in 1983.
According to novelist Penelope Evans, her writing has evolved over time to encompass a common theme: children. But Evans started out on quite a different track, using writing as an attempt to "take control of the process" of being directed by reading other people's books. She initially tried to imitate the writing style of her favorite authors, but with "pretty disastrous results." However, the birth of her first child would change Evans' writing, which became "more direct and much better." With the highly praised novels The Last Girl and Freezing to her credit, her self-evaluation is warranted.
For Evans the process of writing has been motivated by the "panic" of knowing that most others are gainfully employed. Evans writes her first drafts in the first person, usually adopting a male voice, and uses them as a means of getting to know her character. Evans noted that the theme that has begun to emerge from her writing is one of saving the children, a reflection of her interest in the relationship between parents and their offspring. But she also called her work to date "dark," in contrast to her relatively happy and well-ordered life.
Evans' first novel, The Last Girl, was an effort that many critics found effectively gripping and chilling for a first novel. Viewing Evans' work as a compelling character study, San Francisco Review of Books critic Julien Gorbach termed The Last Girl "more of a chiller than a thriller" and "not meant to entertain." And a contributor to Publishers Weekly gave the author credit for "chilling, first-person narration," and called the book a "taut, literary thriller nearly impossible to put down." A People Weekly reviewer described The Last Girl as "a carefully controlled, harrowing portrait of domestic terror."
Evans' second book, 1998's Freezing, is the story of an outcast morgue photographer who stutters and leads a dismal life with his dysfunctional family. Stewart Park's one true happiness is found in playing a computer game, until he becomes intrigued with the body of a young woman who shows up in the morgue. Eventually, Park becomes a suspect in the girl's death and is pursued by criminals with an interest in the outcome of the case. A Publishers Weekly reviewer noted that while the "plot machinery got a little creaky," the novel had a "gripping atmosphere and a truly original protagonist."
