In this book, Perry Bush explores the dramatic changes both within Mennonite communities and in their relationship with mainstream American society between the 1920's and the 1970's, as Mennonite society and culture underwent a profound transformation from seclusion to nearly complete acculturation.

(To celebrate its 1999-2000 centennial, Bluffton College c...)
To celebrate its 1999-2000 centennial, Bluffton College commissioned Perry Bush to write the history of its first 100 years. "Dancing with the Kobzar" tells two stories: first, the tale of BC's birth, growth and development, framed in a social history of BC student life over the past century. A photo essay illustrates this narrative. Second, the account of BC's unique role in Mennonite higher education, that of a Mennonite school, that speaks to students from a wide variety of religious backgrounds and commitments. Combining an engaging style with scholarly support (including extensive notes plus bibliography and index), "Dancing with the Kobzar" delicately balances critical assessment and affirmation of the Bluffton legacy of progressive Anabaptism and its place within Anabaptism.

Since the 1970's, urban communities across the country have had to face the wrenching process of economic restructuring. As the media announce the latest plant closings and politicians slam each other for outsourcing jobs, events are too often framed with a kind of economic determinism, that denies agency to individual communities. To what degree can industrial cities in such an era still imagine themselves as authors of their own economic fates? In "Rust Belt Resistance", author Perry Bush explores this question by focusing on the small midwestern city of Lima, Ohio.

(What does it mean to be Mennonite in the modern world? An...)
What does it mean to be Mennonite in the modern world? And what is the witness of a peace church, that is always at risk of splintering? C. Henry Smith, a son of an Amish family, erudite historian, urbane bank president and pioneer of Mennonite scholarship, sought answers to these questions in the middle of the 20th century, and his answers reverberate through the church to this day. In this engaging narrative biography, historian Perry Bush chronicles Smith's childhood in an Illinois farming community, his youthful turn toward intellectual inquiry and his confidence, that Anabaptist faith and life offer gifts to the wider world.
