(White writes simply and uses easy characters. Good, bad, ...)
White writes simply and uses easy characters. Good, bad, quite, effervescent, they develop quickly, then the story is off and running. Kelsey, the protagonist is a Horatio Alger type who finds himself stuck on a destroyer in the Pacific in WWII instead of Officer's Candidate school in Rhode Island. He is accused of mutiny and desertion during an enemy attack, and his life is immediately made extremely difficult. How he handles the situation and his recovery from it fill the book. The story has a man vs. man conflict (actually two or three), a man vs. nature, and mostly man vs. himself. Ultimately, Kelsey triumphs and grows along the journey. The ride is a great adventure and compelling story. I can't say enough to convince you about how good it is. This is the kind of reading I want my children to have exposure to and enjoy the way I did. They won't learn anything untoward from the book; it will expand their horizons (probably); and I'll bet that they will want to read White's other WWII Pacific stories as well. Adults will find the book a bit simple, but no less enjoyable. If you're debating about whether or not to buy it, do yourself a favor and buy two!
