Member of the Central Committee of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, and leader of its right wing. Opposed SR involvement in terrorism, pleaded for legal political activity. Defended the war effort during World War I. Member of the Executive Committee of Petrograd Soviet in 1917.
Chairman of the All-Russian Congress of Peasants’ Deputies. Minister of the Interior in the Provisional Government, JulyAug. 1917 and chairman of the PreParliament, 1917.
Organized antiBolshevik resistance in the Volga region and Siberia in 1918. Member of the Ufa Directory which was abolished by right-wing officers who made a successful coup in favour of Admiral Kolchak. Emigrated at the end of 1918, lived in Paris.
Co-editor of the most important emigre magazine of its time, Annales Contemporaries. Active opponent of the Soviet government until his death.
