One of the greatest talents of Georgian cinema. A descendant of one of the greatest Georgian classical writers, Ilia Chavchavadze. Specializes in aesthetic featurettes of up to 30 minutes.
His short films are delicate in form and symbolic in character. First short film, The Wedding, 1965, won the Grand Prix at Oberhausen Film Festival in Germany. The Umbrella, 1967, a comical pantomime won the Grand Prix at the Cracow Short Film Festival.
The 15- minute Musicians, 1970, is a minimasterpiece. Other films: The MerryGo-Round, 1962, Mikha, and The Wide Green Valley, 1967.
