Graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Physical Culture, 1969.
He played for the Torpedo Gorky (now Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod) team from 1956 to 1972. Konovalenko led the Soviet team to the IIHF World Championships title every year from 1963 to 1968, 1970, and 1971. He was named the most valuable player in the Soviet league in 1970.
The Konovalenko Sports Palace, arena for the Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod Team, is named after him.
