Graduated from the Rustaveli Theatre Institute, Tbilisi, 1965.

Made his first films with his father: Ozhidanie, 1970, and Teplo Tvoikh Ruk, 1972. His own films include: Obshchaia Stena, 1973 (for Georgian TV), Plotina v Gorakh, 1980, and Vesna Prokhodit, 1984. One of his better works, Ozhivshie Legend'y (Living Legends), was made in 1977 but banned for 10 years.
Shown with great success at the 1988 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, it is a remarkable documentary about Georgia’s life in the past. Released in the Soviet Union as a result of glasnost at the end of 1987.
