Admitted to Massachusetts bar, 1827. An organizer New England Anti-Slavery Society, 1831, contributed much financial support (newspaper Liberator could not have been continued without his help). Favored “gradual abolition” approach to problem.
Successfully presented legal arguments in case of Commonwealth versus Thomas Aves, involving Negro slave Ned who was brought into Massachusetts, established principle that slave brought to Massachusetts could not be taken out of that state against his will.
Practiced law until 1858. Author: An Address to the Abolitionists of Massachusetts on the Subject of Political Action, 1838.
