Admitted Illinois bar, 1853. Later Supreme Court United States. Member National Democratic Convention, and supported Douglas for President, 1860.
After fall of Fort Sumter made 1st war speech in Southern Illinois.
Entered Union army, 1861, as major 56th Illinois volumes Promoted through successive grades to brigadier general.
Ordered and led a successful bayonet charge at Corinth, October 4, 1862. Served under Grant and Sherman.
Severely wounded at Missionary Ridge.
In Atlanta campaign held line of Railroad in rear of Sherman’s army. Discovered and defeated General Wheeler’s raid. Reinforced Resaca at night and held it against General Hood.
In March to the Sea.
Had command under General Hancock in Shenandoah Valley at close of war. Congressman, 1867-1869. United States commissioner internal revenue, 1876-1883.
Commissioner of pensions, 1889-1893.
