Admitted to bar, 1851. One of editors and owners Albany Evening Journal, 1851-1861. Was sent to warn Abraham Lincoln of plot to assassinate him in Baltimore, 1861.
Assistant secretary of state, 1861-1869, 1877-1881.
As acting secretary of state, sat in cabinets of Presidents Lincoln, Johnson and Hayes. Was nearly murdered in his father’s defense, April 14, 1865.
Was sent on special mission with Admiral Porter to negotiate West. Indian treaties, 1867. Participated in purchase of Alaska, and negotiation for Pago-Pago Harbor, Samoa.
