Background
Whitney, James Amaziah was born on June 30, 1839 in Rochester, New York, United States. Son of Amaziah and Margaret Scotland (Taylor) W. (7th in descent from John and Eleanor Whitney, who came from England 1635, settling at Watertown, Massachusetts).
Education
Removed in childhood to Otsego County, New New York Common school education (Master of Arts, Union College, New York, 1870. Doctor of Laws, Iowa College, 1880).
Worked on farm.
Self-taught in chemistry, mechanics and engineering, 1860-1865.
Career
John Wickham Copley, Delaware County, New York, October 31, 1876 (died 1895). Adjunct and later engineer with rank of captain in 39th regiment National Guard New York, 1862-1866. Writer of specifications for patent solicitors, 1865-1868.
Editor of America Artisan, 1868-1872.
Professor agricultural chemistry in American Institute, 1869-1872. Established as patent solicitor, 1872.
Admitted to practice in the United States circuit courts, 1876. Makes specialty of equity practice and corporation, patent, trade-mark and copyright law.
Author: The Relations of the Patent Laws to the Development of Agriculture, 1874.
