Admitted to Louisiana bar. Moved to Houston, Texas, 1839. Abolitionst, forced to flee from home, went to England.
Tried to obtain loan from Great Britain to purchase slaves and then to free them, failed. Learned short-hand system from Isaac Pitman. Returned to Boston, opened school of phonography.
Moved to New York, 1847, interested in spelling reform, edited 2 mags. with printing in phonetic type, Anglo-Saxon and Propagandist. Linguist, master some 32 langs. devised international language Alwato, forerunner Esperanto and Volapiik. Greatest achievement was establishment Universology, deductive science of universe.
Thought ideal society was Pantarch, semi-anarchy. Started colloquium (society for free discussion), New York City, 1882.
