Graduate Waterville (Maine) College (now Colby College), 1826. Attended Princeton Theological Seminary, 1832.
Church, 1833; editor Presbyterian newspaper Saint Louis Observer, 1833-1836, advocated temperance and abolition of slavery. Became editor Alton (Illinois) Observer, 1836, advocated immediate emancipation of slaves. His press destroyed 3 times by anti-abolitionists.
Supported by Ohio Anti-Slavery Society which provided new presses.
Founder Illinois branch American Anti-Slavery Society, 1837. His press destroyed 4th time, 1837.
Received new press from Ohio, placed it under guard in a warehouse. Killed while trying to get to warehouse (which mob had set on fire in attempt to destroy his new press).
Became symbol for abolitionist movement in United States.
