Attended common school, and went to classical school at Lockport winter of 1844-1845. Chiefly selt-taught; honorary Master of Arts, Dartmouth, 1884.
Of age; taught school in Illinois and in Lockport, New York Went to New York City, 1847, and began to write for the press. Went to Boston, 1848. Active as editor and contributor to mags. and jours, since 1848.
