Began in retail bookselling while a student in college, and continued in it until success of Cumulative Book Index, first published in 1898, and of other bibliographical publications based on his origination of cumulative indexing of books and periodicals, necessitated disposing of it in order to move his growing publishing business East in 1913. Organized H. West. Wilson Company, of which is now chairman of the board, issuing Cumulative Book Index, United States Catalog, Readers’ Guide to Periodicals, Book Review Digest, and over dozen subsidiary, supplementary or allied services in addition to reference works, and conducting large back-number periodical department.
