(The failure of diplomacy at the Paris Peace Conference of...)
The failure of diplomacy at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 was perhaps this century's worst blow to orderly world government, and it set the stage for World War II. Woodrow Wilson, of prophetic stature as the American leader, lacked experience in negotiating face to face with the wily Lloyd George and Georges Clemenceau. Moreover, beset by illness, he proved to be unequal to the exacting task of making international arrangements that would be durable and, at the same time, acceptable to his people and to the more war-ravaged peoples of western Europe. The story of the president's negotiations at Paris has never been fully told. Over the last quarter-century, Arthur Walworth has considered the primary documents, American and European, as they became available, has interviewed many of the men who wrote them, and has read the secondary works related to this important story. Now, with the essential evidence in hand, he tells what really happened.
