Wrote 50 articles exposing abuses in the state’s prison system, resulting in revision of Florida laws relating to convict leasing and corporal punishment of prisoners. Annual gold medal of Pulitzer prize, “for the most disinterested and meritorious public service rendered by any American newspaper during the year,” was awarded, 1924, to The World for this service.

Representative American Committee for Relief in Ireland, at London and Dublin, 1921, during warfare which resulted in formation of Irish Free State, serving with one other American (Clemens J. France) as honorary member non-partisan committee, composed of William Cosgrave, first president Irish Free State, and other Irish leaders, the two Americans negotiating with British Cabinet and military officers until consent was won for the Irish commission to relieve distress of non-combatants in Ireland by means of $5,000,000 contributed by American public for that purpose.
