Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1823.
Taught mathematics United States Military Academy, 1823-1827. Served in various artillery posts throughout New England, 1827-1836. Promoted First lieutenant, 1829.
Became engineer after leaving army. Engineer in charge of Croton water-works extension and Croton Reservoir, Central Park, New York, at outbreak of Civil War. Appointed colonel 60th New York Volunteers, 1862, served at Washington, District of Columbia, 1862, appointed brigadier general volunteers serving in Shenandoah Valley.
Fought in battles of Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg (where he commanded defense of Culp’s Hill). Transferred to Tennessee, 1863, wounded at Battle of Wauhatchie, 1863. Resigned commission, 1866, resumed engineering work, New York City, did notable work in other Eastern cities.
Planned sewerage system for Washington, extension of water system in Detroit, Troy and Yonker, New York. A founder American Society of Civil Engineers, president, 1875-1877. Returned to the United States Army as Lieutenant by special act of Congress, placed on retired list, 1894.
Married Elizabeth Vinton, July 14, 1828. Married second, Martha Barrett Dana, February 21, 1837.
