Commissioned brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1861. Assigned to command division in General McDowell’s Corps, 1862, fought at battles of Cedar Mountain and Manassas, in Joseph Hooker’s Corps at Battle of Antietam.
Court martial duty, 1862-1864. Joined army under General Philip Sheriden in Shenandoah Valley, at Battle of Cedar Creek, 1864.
Temporarily in command VI Corps.
Discharged as brigadier general volunteers, reverted to rank major United States Army, 1866. Retired as major general, 1867.
