Graduated from the United States Military Academy and second in command Lieutenant, 7th infantry, July 1, 1846.
Served during Mexican war. Took part in siege of Vera Cruz, battles of Cerro Gordo and Molino del Rey, and capture of City of Mexico. Brevetted First lieutenant for gallant and meritorious conduct in battle of Molino del Rey.
Captain 4th infantry, July 31, 1854.
Served during Civil war, 1861-1865, as major 11th United States infantry. Engaged in battles of Yorktown, Gaines’ Mill and Malvern Hill.
Brevetted Lieutenant-colonel, July 4, 1862, for gallant and meritorious service during peninsular campaign. Engaged in battles of Manassas, Antietam, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
Brevetted colonel, July 2, 1863.
Lieutenant colonel 19th infantry, 1863. Served on the plains, 1868-1879. Colonel, 3d infantry, January 2, 1873.
Retired from active service.
March 1879.
