Background
He is the son of Antonio Skármeta Simunovic and Magdalena Vranicic. He traveled with his first wife, Cecilia Boisier. They have two children: a son Beltran (writer and philosopher), and a son Gabriel (musician).

He is the son of Antonio Skármeta Simunovic and Magdalena Vranicic. He traveled with his first wife, Cecilia Boisier. They have two children: a son Beltran (writer and philosopher), and a son Gabriel (musician).
In 1964 he won a Fulbright scholarship to pursue graduate studies in the United States, where he obtained a Masters Degree at the Univercity of Columbia, New York.
He began working as a theater director in the Artistic Ensemble of the Pedagogical Institute (CADIP), became professor of philosophy at the National Institute and published his first book of stories “Enthusiasm” (1967).
In Argentina he spent a year in the neighborhood of Olivos and published his third book of stories “Free kick” (1974).
From 1979 he worked as a professor of screenwriting at the German Academy of Film and Television in West Berlin.
In 1989 he returned to Chile. In 1992 he founded and led the TV show “The show of books”.
