He was educated at Posen, and in the Royal Academic High School of Music in Berlin.
Traveled through Germany as a “child wonder,” giving concerts, 1870-1873. Resumed concert work, 1876. Became soloist and 1st cellist, Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin, 1885.
Soloist and cellist, Gewandhaus Orchestra, Leipzig, 1886-1889. Soloist Boston Symphony Orchestra and professor N.E. Conservatory, 1889-1898. Soloist and 1st cellist New York Philharmonic Society, 1890-1906.
Professor and conductor National Conservatory Orchestra. Soloist and 1st cellist of the New York Symphony Orchestra. Soloist Philharmonic Society, New York.
Now retired; president New York Tonkuenstler Society Professor music, Yale. Composer of many cello compositions, songs, string quartettes, overtures for orchestra, cantata for chorus and orchestra, performed in public, but not published. 2 books, Cello Album, and 2 books, Cello Classics, published in Leipzig.

Amerindian Fantasy Variations for cello and orchestra. Retired, 1929, and pensioned by the New York Philharmonic Symphony Society after 30 years’ service. Author: Memories—Sixty Years in the Realm of Music.
