Bob Burns was born on August 2, 1890 Robin Burn in Greenwood, Arkansas, the son of William Robert Burn, a civil engineer, and Emma Needham.
From a well-to-do family, Burns attended public school in Van Buren, Arkansas, and later the University of Arkansas, where he studied civil engineering. Burns's interest in music began at an early age when he learned to play the mandolin, guitar, violin, cornet, and piano. At the age of fifteen he began playing the mandolin with the Van Buren City Queen Silver Cornet Band and at the same age created the instrument that was to bring him his first fame.
While practicing with the band in a local plumbing shop, he put together two pieces of gas pipe and a whiskey funnel, blew, and thus was born the bazooka, an instrument resembling the trombone. The name "bazooka, " which he copyrighted in 1920, was later adopted as the name for a weapon designed by the United States Army during World War II that looked like his musical instrument.
In 1907 Burns appeared with the Black Cat Minstrels playing the bazooka. It was with this group that he began his professional career in 1911, touring the South teamed with his brother, Farrar Burn, in a blackface number. Thereafter, with only a few breaks, Burns continued in the entertainment field. He toured in small-time vaudeville for ten years, ran his own carnival show, and was at times an orchestra leader. But he also worked as a river ferry pilot, hay and magazine salesman, peanut farmer, and advertising salesman. In 1913 he appeared as a $3 extra in a mob scene for the old Biograph motion picture studio in New York City.
Burns's career was interrupted by World War I, in which he served as a sergeant in the United States Marines. From 1922 to 1930 Burns continued his career as an entertainer with Claude West in the team Burns and West. In 1930 Burns moved to Hollywood, California, to make motion pictures.
During 1930 he worked with John Swor, playing a blackface team called Black and Blue in the Fox picture Up the River. He appeared in several of Will Rogers' pictures, including Young as You Feel.
In 1935 he appeared in The Singing Vagabond. The following year he played in The Big Broadcast of 1937 and in Rhythm on the Range, with Bing Crosby and Martha Raye.
The team of Burns and Raye proved such a comedy hit that they were teamed again in 1937 in Waikiki Wedding. During the same year he played in Wells Fargo and Mountain Music. In 1938 he played the title role in Arkansas Traveler and also acted in Tropic Holiday and Radio City Revels.
He subsequently appeared in Our Leading Citizen (1939), I'm From Missouri (1939), Alias the Deacon (1940), and Comin' Round the Mountain (1940). In 1942 he played the title role in Hill Billy Deacon, and three years later made Belle of the Yukon. Running simultaneously with Burns's film career was an active career in radio.
Beginning with comedy routines on local West Coast radio shows, in 1932 he made a name for himself as Soda Pop on the "Circus Radio Show. " In 1935 Burns auditioned in New York City for "The Paul Whiteman Hour. "
An immediate success, Burns won a series of guest appearances on the "Rudy Vallee Music Hall. " He began on the Vallee show with political talks in the style of Will Rogers. But when Rogers died and was elevated to a legend, Burns was forced to change his routine.
He returned to his Arkansas origins and developed a hillbilly style that he was to continue on his own radio show.
In December 1935 Burns was signed for a twenty-six-week engagement to work with Bing Crosby on "The Kraft Music Hall"; Burns stayed for six years.
In 1947 Burns retired from the entertainment business in order to devote his time to his ranch in Canoga Park, California. He made wise investments and was ranked among the richest people in Hollywood.
He died in Encino, California.
