Cyrus Byington was born on March 11, 1793 in Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He was one of nine children of Captain Asahel and Lucy (Peck) Byington. His father was a tanner and farmer, industrious and respected.
His the family being in humble circumstances, the future missionary to the Choctaws necessarily received a limited early education. Grown to be a sturdy lad, his career began when Joseph Woodbridge received him into his family and taught him Latin and Greek, a most important aid in his life-work.
Apparently law was prescribed by Mr. Woodbridge as a profession for him and in fact Byington became a lawyer and practised for a few years in his native town and at Sheffield, Massachussets. The profession of law seemingly would have satisfied him but for the fact that he became, as he said, "a subject of divine grace, " and was turned toward the ministry.
Entering the Andover Theological Seminary he graduated in 1819, received ordination as a minister of the gospel, and was licensed to preach. Intent upon missionary work and hoping to go to the Armenians of Turkey, he bided his time till an opportunity should offer. Meanwhile he continued to preach in various churches in Massachusetts.
At this time (1820) recruits to the number of twenty or twenty-five persons set out from Hampshire County, Massachussets, under the direction of the American Board, for the Choctaw Indian nation then in Mississippi. With them went Byington, who was placed in charge of the party. They proceeded by land to Pittsburgh, by flatboats down the Ohio and Mississippi to the mouth of the Yalobusha River, and by another land journey of 200 miles to their destination.
Byington soon began the preparation of a Choctaw grammar and dictionary. Without the help of modern philological science, he had to take up the subject de novo.
here his work on the Choctaw language continued unabated. He completed a "Definer" consisting of English words and Choctaw equivalents, which was published in 1852 under his supervision. He remained in the Choctaw Nation during the Civil War, sustaining his Christian ministry and continuing work on the language, in particular a manuscript of the Choctaw Grammar, which would be published after his death.
In failing health when the war ended, he moved to Ohio to be near his married daughter. There he completed translation of the first five books of the Christian Bible into Choctaw. Called the Pentateuch, that material was published in 1867 under his guidance and supervision in New York. Striving for perfection of the Choctaw Grammar, he continued that work and was preparing his seventh revision of the manuscript when he died December 31, 1868.

Quotations: Byington’s family in the North tried to persuade him to give up the mission and join them there. He was a trained lawyer and could have expected a fairly affluent and comfortable life had he been willing to join them. Instead, he stayed, responding to their entreaties by saying, “I came for life. ”
His portrait shows an alert and enthusiastic face, with clear, piercing eyes and tender mouth. Garbed in a long black coat with broad lapels, a soft collar, and flowing tie, he typified the clergyman of more than a hundred years ago.
Cyrus met Sophia Nye (1800-1880), the daughter of a prosperous family living in Marietta, Ohio in October 1827. Less than a week after their meeting, he proposed marriage to her (which she apparently did not accept immediately), then left for a preaching tour. During their separation, he wrote passionate letters to her, asking her again to marry him and accompany him back to Mississippi, where he served as a minister to the Choctaws. The letters were obviously persuasive, for the couple married in December 1827 and set off on their life-long partnership shortly afterward.
