Tried on charge of immorality and impurity (1st trial of bishop ever held under Canons of Episcopal Church), 1844, suspended from office of bishop and from all functions of sacred ministry. Trustees of General Theological Seminary Did not remove him from professorship.
Various General Convs. were petitioned in effort to remove suspension, but not acted upon by time of his death.
