He was educated at the University of Tübingen with a view to entering the ministry, but preferred literary pursuits, and after his graduation was connected with the press.
Came to American, 1828. Librarian, instructor German, United States Military Academy, 1830-1832. Taught Hebrew, Greek, Kenyon (O.) College, 1832-1835.
Missionary to Cincinnati, 1835. Largely responsible for the founding of German Methodism. Organized 1st German Methodist Church in the United States, Cincinnati, 1838.
