(Excerpt from The Baby's Things: A Story in Verse for Chri...)
Excerpt from The Baby's Things: A Story in Verse for Christmas Eve The work of the day had been laid aside, And now, in the edge of the eventide, She lingered awhile in her favorite seat By a window that overlooked the street, Silent and thoughtful, dreamy and sad; Strangely so for a time so glad. But the somber hue of the dress she wore, And the look of sorrow her features bore, Showed that it had been hers to know The weight of a Father's chastening blow. There she sat leaning and looking away Over the snow that covered the ground, Over the buildings that clustered round, Over the hills that rose beyond. (Excerpt from Long Look House: A Book for Boys and Girls ...)
Excerpt from Long Look House: A Book for Boys and Girls Another of the sounds that reach Long Look comes from the freight yard of the great railway beyond both river and meadow. There, where the lay of the land gives a chance for it, the two tracks are split up into twenty or thereabouts, and there, by means of other tracks connecting with other roads that enter the city, freight trains are made up or broken up as the case may be. In the day time, when many noises are abroad in the air, and the railway is busiest with bringing passenger trains, there is little or no disturb ance from this source; but at night, when all the rest of the world is still, Max is sometimes awakened by the screeching locomotives and the heavy rumble of freight cars, sounding forth upon the empty air. He listens attentively to the whistles - one for down brakes, two for up brakes, three for take out the pin; and, as he listens, pictures to himself the train stepping, the train moving on, or the train breaking in two as it makes a running switch, until he gets tired of the noise beyond endurance, and falls asleep. ( About the Book The Americas were settled by people migr...)
About the Book The Americas were settled by people migrating from Asia at the height of an Ice Age 15,000 years ago. There was no contact with Europeans until Vikings appeared briefly in the 10th century, and the voyages of Christopher Columbus from 1492. America's Indigenous peoples were the Paleo-Indians, who were initially hunter-gatherers. Post 1492, Spanish, Portuguese and later English, French and Dutch colonialists arrived, conquering and settling the discovered lands over three centuries, from the early 16th to the early 19th centuries. The United States achieved independence from England in 1776, while Brazil and the larger Hispanic American nations declared independence in the 19th century. Canada became a federal dominion in 1867. About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. Edward Abbott was born on July 15, 1841 in Farmington, Maine, United States, the youngest son of Jacob Abbott and brother of Austin Abbott, Benjamin Vaughan Abbott, and Lyman Abbott.
Abbott prepared for college at Farmington, Maine and in the city of New York, where he graduated with honors from New York University in 1860.
He then took the three years' course in theology at Andover Seminary, spending some months during that period in the service of the United States Sanitary Commission with the Army of the Potomac.
Abbott entered the Congregational ministry in 1863. After acting as chaplain to various public institutions in Boston for two years, he organized and became pastor of the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Cambridgeport, Massachussets. Four years later he resigned and became assistant editor of the Congregationalist in Boston. While holding this position he published The Baby's Things: a Story in Verse for Christmas Eve (1871), A Paragraph History of the United States (1875), A Paragraph History of the Revolution (1876), and other writings of a popular character. He resigned in 1878 to become editor of the Literary World, a position which he held until 1888, and again from 1895 to 1903.
He was disturbed by the current liberalism; and in Lent of the same year (1878) in which he left the Congregationalist he was confirmed in the Episcopal Church. Almost immediately after his confirmation he was brought into service as a lay-reader in Episcopal churches. As such he was soon placed in charge of the parish of St. James in North Cambridge, then a home-missionary enterprise. As soon as the regulations of the Church permitted he was made rector, and here he remained, successful and beloved, for the rest of his life, becoming rector emeritus in 1908.
In addition to the works already mentioned he published Revolutionary Times; Sketches of Our Country, Its People and Their Ways One Hundred Years Ago (1876) and various other memoirs, sketches of places, and other works.
