Reese garduated from the University of Virginia in 1884. Two years later, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from Heidelberg University.
Rees began his career as an Assistant in chemistry at Johns Hopkins University in 1886 and held the position for two years. In 1888, he was a Professor of chemistry at Wake Forest College. The same year Charles became a Professor at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. In 1896, he took a position of an Instructor at Johns Hopkins University. Four years later he was appointed a Chief Chemist at the New Jersey Zinc Company.
In 1902, he began his long association with E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company as Chief Chemist of the Eastern Dynamite Company at Repauno, New Jersey. Also Rees established the Eastern Laboratory. In 1906, Charles assumed charge of the Chemical Division of the High Explosives Operating Department. Five years later he became the Director of DuPont Company. Reese retired from the Board of DuPont on January 1, 1931.

On April 10, 1901 Charles Rees married Harriet S. Bent. They have 5 children.
