Roberts was born on February 13, 1859 in New York City, New York, United States; the daughter of Horace and Mary (Hart) Roberts.
Roberts received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College in 1880. Fourteen years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University.
Roberts began his career as an instructor of chemistry at Wellesley College in 1881. Six years later he took a position of an assistant professor at the same college. Since 1892 Charlotte was a professor at Wellesley College.
