Came to the United States, 1851. Modeled clay in his father’s terra cotta art works at Cincinnati. Commenced painting at Memphis, Tennessee, 1866.
Studied in the Academie des Beaux Arts, Paris. Also in Belgium and Italy. Returned to Memphis, 1872.
Located in St. Louis, 1874-1884. Established art work in Washington University, now St. Louis School of Fine Arts. Subsequently spent 12 years in Paris.
Returned to the United States.
Received medal and diploma International Exposition, Philadelphia, 1876, and Paris, 1889. Member National Jury, Chicago World’s Fair. His specialties are portraits and figure pieces, in oil and water-colors.
Painted The Light of Incarnation. Evening of Sixth Day. Also mural paintings: The Spectrum of Light (in Library of Congress).
Law and Justice (pictorial scheme in 14 parts), Fort Wayne Court House. And a pictorial development of the Unitarian Theology in People’s Church, St. Paul.
Member National Jury, Chicago World’s Fair. His specialties are portraits and figure pieces, in oil and water-colors. Painted The Light of Incarnation.
