Art Sinsabaugh was born on October 31, 1924, in Irvington, New Jersey, United States. He was the son of Grant Regynold and Helyn Edna (Reeder) Sinsabaugh.
Art Sinsabaugh received a Bachelor of Science in 1949 from the Institute of Design, Chicago, Illinois, where he studied with Harry Callahan and Moholy-Nagy. He later took a Master of Science (1967) from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, studying with Aaron Siskind.
From 1949 to 1959 Art Sinsabaugh worked part-time as an instructor in the Institute of Design and from 1959 to 1983 was an assistant professor at the University of Illinois until he died in Chicago, Illinois. From 1972 to 1973 Art Sinsabaugh worked for the Center for Advanced Studies and the University of Illinois where he was an associate member. He was one of the founders of the Society for Photographic Education.
In 1969 Art Sinsabaugh became a fellow in Guggenheim and by 1977 became a fellow at the National Endowment for the Arts Photographers.
