Kenyon Cox studied in Cincinnati and Philadelphia, in Paris under Carolus Duran and Gerôme, 1877-1882.
Kenyon Cox moved to New York to work as an illustrator and art critic. Within ten years Cox was accepting mural commissions for such prestigious institutions as the Library of Congress and the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. These projects helped realize his hopes that art could serve an educational purpose. He was the author of several books in which he generally argued against new movements in art and advocated what he termed the classic point of view.
Kenyon Cox was a member of the American Academy Arts and Letters.
Kenyon Cox was married to Louise Howland King.
