Head of one of the divisions of the National Library and later librarian of the Chilean Congress. Identified with the Liberal movement (as member of the Liberal party and of the Club del Progreso) which was largely responsible for the revolution of 1891. Secretary of the political convention which nominated Federico Errázuriz for the presidency, 1896.
Deputy from Curioco, 1897-1915. Minister of Industry and Public Works, 1908. Delegate of the Chilean Congress to the Argentine Centenary, 1910.
Minister of Finance, 1913. Delegate of the Chilean Congress to the inaugural ceremonies of the AricaLa Paz Railway, 1915. Elected senator, 1915.
Prime Minister (with portfolio of the Interior), 1918. President of Chile from 1920 until his resignation in 1924. Recalled to office shortly thereafter, Sr.
Alessandri resigned definitely from office in 1925. Elected President of Chile for the term 1932-1937.
