a Via’s work is a meditation on internal tensions ln a Philosophical tradition that finds its Italian ^Pression in Gentile, tensions which stem from a egelian drive to resolve differences into unity. e unveils in idealism the constant tension tween absolute subjectivism and absolute his- 0ricism, between the view that everything is etermined by the self and the view of the self as a unction of historical forces. Descartes and Kant ac*,claimed truth to be something which the self uistitutes and into which it enters. But from what Point of view is this assertion made? If made by a * *hat stands outside the process, a kind of ^anscendcntalism results that is at odds with its antian origins and which implies an unaccepP e duality between the self and what it knows. °r La Via truth is not, as it was for idealists, otething to be viewed from a transcendental evvPoint. Eire e avoir generates from this a,c>sm of possessiveness and its atl0n to contemporary decadence and opposes to it an analysis of the experiences that lead us to spirituality.
