Discovered the first petroleum accumulations in subsurface of Libya 1938, and Mg and K deposits. Leader of the first successful ascent of K2 (28,250 feet), second highest peak in the world 1954.
Organized expeditions for gauging height of K2 and Everest 1987, for geophysical and geological investigation in Shaksgam Valley and Sinkiang, and multidisciplinary researches on the south slope of Everest 1989.
