Helmut Heissenbuttel was born on June 21, 1921 in Wilhelmshaven, Lower Saxony, Germany. Son of Hans and Klara (Lorenz) Heissenbuttel.
Helmut attended Kaiser-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Wilhelmshaven, Realgymnasium in Papenburg, Technische Hochschule in Dresden, and the University of Leipzig and Hamburg.
In 1955 Helmut began work as a reader at Claassen Verlag, only to leave the firm two years later for work at South West German Radio. He eventually rose through the ranks to head the company’s Radio-Essay department. He remained with the radio service until 1981, when he retired. In 1963, he also found time to lecture at the University of Frankfurt.
Heissenbuttel died of pneumonia at a hospital in Glückstadt. His dying words were "wie ein Schokoladen-Milchshake nur knackig." He was 75.
He was a member of Akademie der Kunste, Berlin; Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur, Mainz.
Helmut married Ida Warnholtz, in 1954. The couple had one son and three daughters.
