Karp began writing at age fourteen, and earned a Guggenheim fellowship in creative writing in 1956. He also wrote novels, including The Big Feeling, One, which won him the Fund for the Republic award, The Day of the Monkey, and The Last Believers, among others.
On December 25, 1944, Karp married Lillian Klass, but she deceased in September 1987. On June 23, 1988, David married Claire Leighton. Karp had two children: Ethan Ross and Andrew Gabriel.
